Merrepen and Barunga Festival
7 Days / 6 Nights
The Katherine area hosts a variety of events each year, two of which highlight the strong Aboriginal culture of the area, the Merrepen Arts Festival and the Barunga Festival.
Merrepen Arts Festival - 30 May 2008 to 01 June 2008
- The annual Merrepen Arts Festival is held over the first weekend of June in the friendly community of Nauiyu, 240 kilometres south-west of Darwin on the banks of the Daly River. While the exquisite visual arts of the region, based on its abundant bush tucker, are the focus of the weekend, the festival encompasses a combination of events, including art sales and auctions, traditional music and dance, bush tucker displays and tasting and a football and sporting carnival.
Barunga Festival - 06 June 2008 to 09 June 2008
- The annual Barunga Festival is held in this remote Aboriginal community over the Queens Birthday long weekend and is one of the major and longest-running Indigenous community festivals in the Northern Territory. The festival showcases contemporary indigenous musicians from the Territory in a battle-of-the-bands event on the Saturday night and a full concert on the Sunday with some of the Territorys top indigenous bands.
